Remedies for a Dry Scalp

Dry, itchy, uncomfortable scalp… I know I’m not the only one out there who’s had to deal with this! A dry scalp is the worst. Not only is it uncomfortable it can also affect how your hair looks! A dry scalp tends to make your hair more dry as since the natural oils aren’t there to do their job on providing natural shine and moisture.

At my last hair appointment, my girl Amy Estrada, noticed that my scalp had gotten reallllly dry. Guys, it was NOT cute!! She said that almost 85% of her clients are coming in with some degree of dry scalp, mostly due to the change in seasons. She used this scalp scrub during my wash and it worked so well I had to have it.  In the past I used Ouai’s scalp scrub which I also really liked. I just ran out so it was perfect timing to try something new!

Below are my tried and true methods on combating dry scalp season.

  1. Less dry shampoo & other products. Why?

    • Alcohol causes dryness. Yes, that amazing texturizing spray contains a sh!t ton of alcohol. Along with soo many other products like hairspray, dry shampoo, volumizer, even some heat protectants.

    • Product buildup. Ever go overboard with product, touch your hair, and then suddenly have white marks on your clothes? Because same. The product build up problem is real. Not only does it make hair look matted down, it can look like dandruff!

    • Dry shampoo can dry out your scalp. As tempting as it is to use dry shampoo everyday, using it in excess can actually sometimes prove to be too drying on your scalp.

  2. Get yourself a good scalp scrub.

I linked my two favorites above ^ I never used to think I needed a separate scrub for my head but after trying a few I am definitely a believer. It’s important you use one made for the scalp - I find the scrubby beads are more emollient and leave behind just a little bit of moisture - without being too harsh of course. I would avoid using one that feels too sandy/scrubby - no one wants that left behind in their hair!

  3. On top of the scrub, treat yourself to a bonus

As much as I love being extra and using a bunch of different products, sometimes I’m just feeling lazy. BUT at least every other wash, I make sure use a specialty treatment that helps with scalp health.

    • ACV Rinse - I’ll use this while my conditioner is sitting. Multi tasking always, you know? It’s no secret I love me some apple cider vinegar. I love dpHue, their stuff all around is fantastic. ACV has SO many benefits, it’s amazing! I detail my daily shot of ACV here if you’re interested.

    • Clarifying, anti dandruff shampoo has evolved a long way since Head and Shoulders, y’all! I recommend rotating this shampoo with whatever else you’re using. For my blondes, you can even mix it with your purple shampoo - gotta keep the brass away at all costs!

  4. Add tea tree oil to your shampoo.

I firmly believe in incorporating essential oils into my beauty routine as much as possible. Tea tree oil is one of those amazing multi purpose oils - it’s the best for detoxifying and clarifying. When I have breakouts, I’ll put a little on at night and usually the blemish is 80% gone by the morning. When mixing it with shampoo, only use a few drops. It is POTENT! My favorite is this one. You don’t want to go overboard since too much can easily become drying.
